Maple Class - Year 3 & 4
Welcome to Maple Class
Hello everyone and welcome to Maple Class. I hope you have had a lovely summer and are ready for a new academic year. This year will be filled with many exciting opportunities and experiences for our children.
Class Teacher: Miss Wilson
Class Teaching Assistants: Miss Sykes and Mrs Woodhead
PE DAYS: Monday and Thursday
English
Our first text we are looking at in English this year is 'A Bear called Paddington'.
The children will explore the story and its themes before moving on to retelling their own story with their own character changes.
Throughout the half-term, we’ll be looking at different pieces of writing that include character and setting descriptions.
Guided Reading
Guided reading will be done using a whole-class approach. We will be reading our class novel 'How to train your Dragon'.
We have a real passion for reading at Water Primary School, and we encourage our children to have a love of books and reading also.
Maths
In Maths, we will continue to use Power Maths and the children will be taught in year groups.
Year 3 children will start with place value within 1000 and then will move on to addition and subtraction.
Year 4 will also start with place value which will include 4 digit numbers before moving onto addition and subtraction.
Timetables are also a very important part of maths, and we will continue to develop our understanding of this by using TT Rockstars daily. It would also help the children considerably if they practise at home.
Please note that Year 4 will carry out a timetables check in July 2025.
Science
In science, year 3 and year 4 will be looking at animals including humans. Year 3 will be learning about our skeleton, how our bones affect what we can do, what our muscles do, whether all animals have the same skeleton and nutrition. Year 4 will be learning about the digestive system, the shapes of our teeth, what tooth decay is and interpreting and constructing food chains.
Geography
This half-term we will be learning all about climate zones and biomes . We will be looking at what weather and climate is, what climate zones are, describing latitude and geographical location, biomes and vegetation belts, climate change and the effect it can have on our environment.
History
This half-term we will be looking at the Romans and, in particular, Queen Boudicca. We will learn about who the Romans were and why they invaded Britain, what life was like before the Romans, who Boudicca was and why she rebelled, what happened during Boudicca's revolt, what the consequences were of Boudicca's resistance and how should Boudicca be remembered.
P.E
PE will continue to be taught in mixed-year groups with PE taking place on Monday afternoons and Thursday afternoons for all children in Maple Class. Please could you ensure that children come to school wearing the correct P.E. kits on the day of their session.
Readers
We expect children to be reading at home most nights for around 10/15 minutes. We want to encourage a love of reading as much as possible so that children can understand the key aspects of reading.
Snack
If you wish for your child to have snack, this will need to be paid via Parent Pay.
A note from Miss Wilson
If you have any questions or concerns, my door is always open.
I look forward to a great year in Maple Class.
